The Reaper

The Reaper is a vintage Fifie Herring Boat which still plies the rough waters of the North Sea as floating museum to the now largely gone Scottish Herring industry. I chose the Reaper as a subject after seeing she would again be at the Scottish Traditional Boats Festival, which is held close to my home every year. Her form is intriguing being both a purposeful sailing vessel and quite obviously a work boat none the less. Her tough life is reflected in the knots and flaws running through the wood of the base.

The inscription “Chasing the Silver Darlings” is a local Doric dialect phrase, the Silver Darlings being the beautiful herring themselves.

Cast Clear Glass, Hand carved and lettered Scottish Elm with hidden selectable coloured lighting in the base. About 22″ / 56cm high.
